Are you wondering about prices at the pump and want to save money on gas this year? Are you in the market for a new or used Chevrolet vehicle around Hudson? No matter the case, understanding “What does MPG mean” or “What does MPG stand for” can help you in your car selection.

Knowing what is MPG in cars, in particular good MPG, can help you get a good car and effective fuel efficiency. Learn more about this, and “What is MPG highway?” as well, with Sawyer Chevrolet, Inc..

What is MPG?

To start off, “What does MPG stand for?” Standing for “Miles Per Gallon,” this measures the distance in miles that any car can travel on a gallon of fuel. For those buying cars based on their fuel efficiency, knowing what is MPG in cars is No #1! The higher a car’s MPG, the superior its overall fuel economy will be.

In the United States, the EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, is the official government organization that classifies all car’s MPG ratings. To properly measure a vehicle’s MPG can be difficult as traffic congestion and road conditions affect fuel consumption differently. This is why the EPA runs multiple tests in different types of driving courses. They then average the scores and assign ratings based on three different and unique categories:

  • City MPG: The average MPG ratings for most urban driving conditions in the US. Many car drivers will use a lot more fuel in these regions due to more frequent stopping and starting. This is of course taken into consideration throughout the scoring process.
  • Highway MPG: This categorizes most MPG vehicle ratings for driving on highways, or long stretches of the wide open road. Those driving longer on rural roads or highways, without taking time to stop, will have taken into consideration.
  • Combined MPG: This represents the combined average of both your highway and city MPG ratings.

How Can I Calculate My Own Vehicle’s MPG?

Now that you know what is MPG in cars or “What is MPG highway,” you might be unsure about what’s a good car MPG. To calculate your MPG, you can do the following step and see how much money it’s costing you around Saugerties:

  1. Fill your tank up with gas and reset your trip odometer.
  2. Drive around Windham until your gas tank is almost empty.
  3. Take your odometer reading (the number of miles you’ve driven since your last refuel). Divide this number by the total number of gallons it takes to fill your tank up with gas.

Once calculated, your combined MPG ratings can be the most accurate measurement of your vehicle’s MPG since many Windham and Kingston drivers spend a lot of time commuting and driving to multiple places. The rate of gas consumption will depend on your driving conditions, daily and even weekly.
