How to Improve Gas Mileage When Driving

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

Drivers are always looking for more ways to conserve fuel during their daily errands or on the highways. Many of the vehicles in our new Chevrolet inventory are fuel-efficient by nature, and you’ll even find all-electric Bolt EV and Bolt EUV models. But, there are steps you can take to maximize the fuel economy of an already fuel-efficient vehicle. Below, we’ve outlined some very simple ways to improve gas mileage wherever you go.

Tips on Improving Fuel Efficiency

You can use the following tips to improve your car’s fuel efficiency whether you’re traveling on residential roads or highways:

  1. Gently Accelerate: Press the gas pedal softly rather than slamming it down. Give the car about 10 seconds to increase its speed by 10 mph.
  2. Avoid Rush Hour: No one wants to sit in stop-and-go traffic, and doing so can actually cause you to use more fuel. Plan ahead and leave early to avoid rush hour traffic or take a detour to your destination that isn’t as busy.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: Traveling at a higher speed requires more fuel vs. traveling at a lower speed. Try to keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph on the highways (it will also help to ensure you’re following the speed limit).
  4. Coast Whenever Possible: If there’s no one directly ahead of you, allow your car to coast to a stop by taking your foot off the gas pedal. You can do the same thing on hills; reduce the speed as you travel uphill, then travel downhill using the momentum of your car.
  5. Use AC at Highway Speeds: Car AC does require gas, so use it sparingly when you’re traveling around town. On the highways, using your car’s AC vs. rolling down the windows is actually more efficient. This is because opening the windows increases the drag coefficient.
