How Often to Replace a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery
If it has been a while since your new or pre-owned vehicle has had a battery replacement, you’re likely wondering how often to replace a car battery. In most cases, you should be replacing your battery every 4-5 years, but this can change depending on your specific usage in Hudson and other factors. Now that we know how often to replace a car battery, let’s take a look at other questions many drivers have such as:

  • How much is a replacement car battery?
  • How to know if your car battery needs to be replaced?
  • How to test a car battery?

These are common questions that the Sawyer Chevrolet, Inc. service and parts team regularly get asked so we’re here to clear the air.

Warning Signs Your Battery Needs to Be Replaced

If you’re wondering how to know if your car battery needs to be replaced, there are some warning signs you can usually look out for. You don’t want to become stranded when you’re going on Saugerties adventures, so we recommend you learn about some of these warning signs. Without further ado, here’s how to know if your car battery needs to be replaced:

  • Dimmed headlights
  • Frequently requiring jump-starts
  • Longer engine turnover
  • Vehicle power inconsistencies

Unfortunately, over time as you drive your vehicle, the battery naturally becomes worn down and can result in needing a replacement. Here’s what causes deterioration in your car’s battery:

  • Heat
  • Loose battery clamps/terminals
  • Regularly needing jumpstarts
  • Time

Test Your Vehicle’s Battery

Curious about how to test a car battery? We’ve got you covered. When you bring your vehicle in for maintenance at our dealership, we do our best to regularly check your vehicle’s battery to make sure it’s in working order. However, if you want to know how to test a car battery in your own Windham driveway, continue reading below:

Headlight Test

  1. Start your vehicle and leave it in park with the headlights on.
  2. Rev your engine and take note of the headlight brightness level.
  3. If your headlights get brighter, it means the battery is weak and not powerful enough to illuminate your headlights at normal brightness when idling. If you notice this, it means you could need a new battery.

Digital Multimeter Test

  1. Set your voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Attach the negative probe on the meter to your vehicle’s negative battery terminal.
  3. Attach the positive probe on the meter to the vehicle’s positive battery terminal.
  4. Turn on your vehicle’s headlights while taking note of the numbers on the voltmeter.
  5. If you notice the voltmeter at 80℉ reads 12.5 volts, it means your battery is 100% charged. If it reads 12.3 volts, it means the battery is at 75%. And anything less than 11.8 volts means the battery is at 25% charge or less.

Cost of a Replacement Battery

So, how much is a replacement car battery? A replacement car battery can range from $75 to $200 depending on the specific battery your vehicle needs. If you know how to change your vehicle’s battery and you’d prefer to DIY, you can order parts online directly from our team.

Wondering, “how much is a replacement car battery on a hybrid?” Hybrid car batteries are much more complex and will likely require assistance from a professional. The cost could range between $1,000 to $6,000 but will need to be replaced less often than a typical car battery. Additionally, the replacement hybrid battery cost is typically offset by the cost of gas when driving around town.
