How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

If you’ve thought to yourself, “How long can I drive on a spare tire?”, you’re not alone. Spare tires are talked about often, but none of us like having to use one when we suddenly get a flat tire on Hudson roads, or when we know our tires need to be replaced sooner than later.

Drivers will want to replace a spare tire as soon as possible, because they’re only meant to be driven on for shorter lengths of time. Learn more about how long you can drive with a spare tire below before exploring more service tips from our dedicated service center.

How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire: Space-Saver Spare

If you get a flat while driving in Kingston, you may notice that your spare tire is smaller than your normal tires. A smaller spare tire is called a space-saver tire (or donut tire), and they’re included often on newer vehicles. They have restrictions though that necessitate replacing your spare as soon as possible:

  • They shouldn’t be driven for more than 70 miles
  • They generally can’t be driven over 50 miles per hour
  • You’ll have less traction than with a full-size spare

Your specific space-saver spare tire will state any other information or restrictions on the tire itself. You’ll want to get to the nearest service center near you as soon as possible to repair your old tire or to replace your tire.

How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire: Full-Size Spare

Full-size tires are less common, but they’re often included in new SUVs or trucks. They can be used longer than space-saver tires, but we still recommend replacing this tire as soon as you can. It’s unlikely to share the same brand as your other tires and quality can differ, leading to poor traction and handling.

What is a Run-Flat Tire?

When looking up flat tires, you may come across run-flat tires. These tires can maintain their pressure even after being punctured. They have their own ups and downs to keep in mind:

  • They’ll stay inflated for about 50 miles after a puncture
  • They’re tougher than a space-saver tire or full-size spare
  • They often cost more than a standard tire

If you have run-flat tires and your tire pressure monitor is telling you that those tires are low on air pressure, safely stop your vehicle and inspect your tires. If you have a visible puncture, you’ll need to repair or replace the tire as soon as possible.
