Does GM Own Chevy?

When comparing GMC vs. Chevy vehicles, you may have noticed that they share many of the same features. For example, the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks have the same frames, transmissions, and engines.

With that in mind, does GM own Chevy? Yes, General Motors (GM) owns Chevy, along with GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. GM was first launched in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, and the automotive brand has been at the forefront of automotive innovation ever since. This brings us to the history of Chevy, which we’ll touch on below.

The History of Chevrolet

So, is Chevy GM? Not exactly. While GM owns Chevy now, that wasn’t always the case. Chevy was co-founded as an independent company by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant on November 3, 1911. GM wouldn’t merge with Chevrolet until 1918 when they sought “a car for every purse and every purpose.”

This slogan still rings true today, with the legendary American brand offering a diverse range of practical, affordable, and reliable cars, trucks, and SUVs. From the robust Silverado to the family-friendly Traverse, the Chevy lineup has something for every Windham driver.
